Shipping
The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed to commercial traffic. IMF PortWatch logged one transit on 20 September, against about 85 a day before the war.
Costs
Brent crude is trading above USD 100 a barrel, which keeps pressure on fuel, freight and input costs across the region.
Demand
Activity is recovering. The UAE's non-oil PMI rose to 55.3 in August, its strongest reading since December 2024, and Saudi Arabia's reached 53.8. Firms report switching to local suppliers to work around the disruption.
Demand is returning while supply routes stay disrupted. The advantage goes to businesses that have already secured alternative suppliers and protected their cash.

I am a business resilience advisor and the founder of the GCC Business Resilience Program, an executive program built specifically for GCC market conditions.
My background: a PhD in industrial and systems engineering; advisory work at KPMG, where I received the Gold and Platinum Awards of Excellence; and over a decade of applied operational work with more than $4.1M in quantified savings. From 2023 to 2025 I was an AI Mentor and Advisor with Break Through Tech at MIT. I have published 13 peer-reviewed papers and am a Lean Black Belt. I have worked on the ground in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar across multiple sectors.
I am based in New York, work across the GCC, and am a native Arabic speaker. Every framework in the program has been tested against real business situations, and several build on methods from my published research.
